Ο Κρις Τέηλορ εγκαταλείπει τις σπουδές του στο κολέγιο και πηγαίνει εθελοντικά στο Βιετνάμ. Ο ιδεαλισμός του Κρις διαλύεται απότομα όταν αντικρίζει την αληθινή όψη του πολέμου. Οι συνάδελφοί του που γίνονται κομμάτια δίπλα του, οι σφαγές και οι βιασμοί σε βάρος του ντόπιο πληθυσμού και η προδοτική ζούγκλα, δεν αργούν αν κάνουν τον νεαρό εθελοντή τόσο κυνικό, όσο και οι υπόλοιποι μαχητές.

Ο Κρις θα παρακολουθήσει την σύγκρουση ανάμεσα στον λοχία Ελαϊάς, έναν βετεράνο που διατηρεί ατόφια την ανθρωπιά του, και το λοχία Μπαρνς, έναν ψυχοπαθή φονιά. Σύγκρουση που θα εξελιχθεί σε αιματηρή αναμέτρηση.
